BACKGROUND The first service for mobile was "voice". Since then many Value Added Services (VAS) have been introduced, e.g. short message services (SMS), Java downloading, Internet browsing, multimedia messaging (MMS), location-based services (LBS). In China there is no clear process on how to adopt global mobile VAS technologies and turn them into operative services and end-user benefits. And more new global VAS technologies are getting mature e.g. Push-to-talk over Cellular (PoC), TV broadcast to mobile DVB-H. Each new VAS technology enables creation of new categories of applications and services. By combining existing and new VAS services, complexity grows but so does opportunities for both Chinese and European SME industries. European small and medium size enterprises (SMEs) with innovative mobile applications/content need to understand Chinese requirements earliest in order to be able to make access to China market.
OBJECTIVE: This project aims to recognize and produce information about China-specific needs related to existing and future mobile VAS. Project objective is to identify and network with those Chinese organizations, which are key influencers in the market entry process for VAS technologies. This project will produce information, which will clarify the process of how China accepts and adopts new VAS technologies as basis for new innovative applications. METHOD Project has partnered with Beijing University of Posts and Telecomms to identify the key Chinese influencers and organizations and to map China VAS entry process. Project coordinator organizes monthly workshops for sharing information and problem issues. Target is to understand and even further-develop the VAS entry process, and to enable person-level networking. Project can lead into future actions with Chinese organizations in IST Call 4 and 5. RESULTS Summary Report will be introduced at public VAS CHINA seminar and made available via a website.
